When I say summer love, I am not referring to the 1967 San Francisco psychedelic movement, Summer of Love. Rather, I am thinking more along the lines of the John Travolta and Olivia Newton John type of summer love … or summer lovin’. It might have something to do with the kinds of activities that take place during this particular season: BBQs, relaxing at the lake or beach, hanging around the pool, sunset walks and ice cream cones. Perhaps it is the carefree attitude that we adopt, due to reduced stress levels via these types of activities … or the simple fact that everyone is wearing less clothing. One thing I can say with certainty is, whether or not summer love is something that we can clinically quantify, it is definitely a thing.
It’s anecdotal and pop cultural, with dozens upon dozens of songs, movies, and pieces literature themed around it. Sometimes you can feel the amorous weight to the air as you walk around town. Summer love and summer flings are definitely a thing; it’s all around us and undeniable.
Summer of Discontent or Tempted By The Fruits of Another?
Summertime is fun. But, perhaps a bit too much fun. In 2013, Facebook released data recorded in 2010 and 2011 showing that from the months of May to August, there were significant increases in breakups throughout all age groups (under 25, 25-45, 45 and up). Could this be that many relationships end to make way for new summer love? Or are people feeling better about themselves because of the weather and the social atmosphere, and are finally pulling the trigger on a bad relationship? Whatever it is, come July and August, there are plenty of singles out there to choose from.
Summer Dating is the Best
Summertime is the perfect time to have fun with dating. Like the little-known boy band, LFO said, “Summer girls come and summer girls go. Some are worthwhile and some are so-so.” That statement goes both ways. So I don’t mean that you should rush out to tie yourself down, but go out and have some fun!
There are so many things to do and there are not many good reasons that you should be doing them all alone. The weather is fantastic, there are art and music festivals, food, wine, and beer festivals, carnivals and fairs, social gatherings of all shapes and sizes. So go out on a few dates with different people. See who you get along with and who you enjoy passing these wonderful summer days with.
It’s alright if your first summer date isn’t going to be the person that you spend the rest of your life with, that’s why they call it dating. It is even OK if you date one person throughout most of the summer but end up saying your goodbyes when the responsibilities that autumn brings returns. The important thing is that you enjoy yourself during the summer months. There is plenty of time to spend cooped up in your house during the winter months. So get out there! Meet some people and have fun this summer!
