What To Expect When Dating Someone With Kids

We all want to be number one in the eyes of our significant other. It’s part of the Disneyesque fantasy that most of us have been programmed with. This is why I hear the term ‘deal-breaker’ thrown around so haphazardly when it comes to dating a person who has children from a previous relationship. Dating someone with kids (in the hearts & minds of those who have no children)  can feel like there is a living, breathing reminder that they are not going to be the number one priority ... front and center at all times. Not only is this type of thinking unfair to single parents out there, but people could be missing out on someone great just because of a few negative, preconceived notions.

Puppies and Love

Puppies and love – a winning combination that has stood the test of time!  But what does your relationship with your beloved canine really mean in terms of love and life?  In slang terms, we use the phrase “puppy love” to express feelings of simple infatuation and admiration often occurring in childhood or early adolescence. And an accurate turn of phrase at that, because what love is more simple, unconditional and enduring than that between pet and owner?  Dogs get a bum rap for being, let’s say, less than intelligent.  But those affable furry faces reveal a brain that has evolved with some pretty savvy survival skills!  Dogs are masters at manipulating human instincts for paternal connections.  They can often behave in ways that show base emotions such as love and curiosity that fool us into treating these lovable pups like our own offspring.  They provide us with non-verbal loyalty and affection in exchange for food and shelter.

Due to this relationship, humans are free to fill in the blanks of what we’d like the dog to be telling us, “I love you,” or “You’re my best friend,” when really they’re probably just thinking, “I’m hungry!  Feed me!”

Dogs are amazingly skilled at noticing human patterns of behavior.  They observe how we’re acting according to emotion and respond to their benefit.  Even if this is just a survival trait on the part of the dog, how can we not love them?  It doesn’t trivialize the relationship between pet and human, but merely explains it.  Due to the simple exchange of needs and affections, what better way to give and receive love?

And the same may be true for those early blushes of “puppy love” with humans in our youth.  We’re fumbling to fill instinctual human relationship patterns, and first relationships may also be idealized in very easy exchanges of love that we remember fondly for their lack of expectation and unbroken hearts.

Cupid’s Cronies invites you to celebrate all forms of puppy love – whether it’s the excitement of a first date leading to a new relationship or the rescue of a puppy into a loving home.  Join us Friday, February 14, for a Valentine’s Day Singles’ Fundraising Event at the The Tangiers, located in the trendy and historic North Loop neighborhood of downtown Minneapolis.

Donations will be taken on behalf of Secondhand Hounds Animal Rescue, a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal rescue based in Edina.  Secondhand Hounds has secured loving homes for over 5,000 dogs, cats and various critters.  The organization provides safe shelter, proper veterinary care and daily necessities for animals at risk, while working hard to find each a permanent, loving home.

Interested parties are encouraged to visit the Cupid’s Cronies Events Page for more information or call (612) 483-3393 for more information.  We also urge those interested to join the Minneapolis Meetup group, Singles with a Cause.
